Dr. Sawyer joined the Department of Neurology and the Jacobs Neurological Institute in December of 2008 as Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs and Chief of Stroke Services. In June of 2009, he was appointed Interim Chairman of the Department of Neurology for the University at Buffalo, and Interim Chief of the Jacobs Neurological Institute. Prior to his relocation to Buffalo to join our faculty, Dr. Sawyer had a very distinguished, 30-year career in the Navy.
Dr. Sawyer graduated from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland and completed a neurology residency at Case Western. He went on to complete fellowship training in Oculomotor Research at Case Western, and then completed a fellowship in the Undersea Medical Officer School at the Naval Undersea Medical Institute. While in the Navy, he served in faculty appointments with Case Western, in the United Kingdom, and at Naval Medical Centers in Ft. Lewis, Washington, and in Portsmouth, Virginia. In addition to Dr. Sawyer’s career as a neurologist, he has also maintained his status as an Adjunct Staff Member of Life Flight MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, as well as numerous military assignments involving explosive ordnance disposal and management, deep sea diving and surface warfare, navy/marine corps parachutist, submarine medical officer, senior medical officer of hyperbaric medicine, Director of Medical Education at the Naval Undersea Medical Institute, and numerous other qualifications and appointments.
